Stockholm, September 2025 – Planboo, a climate technology startup enabling biochar carbon removal projects in the Tropics, has partnered with Better Cotton, the world’s largest cotton sustainability initiative, which works with 2.2 million licensed farmers, around 22% of the world’s cotton farmers, to introduce biochar production for Better Cotton licensed farmers.
Through this initiative, farmers receive tools, technology and training to turn agricultural waste, such as cotton stalks, into biochar that’s redistributed back into their soils. This process removes CO₂ from the atmosphere, improves soil quality and water retention capacity, and helps farmers build resilience amid increasingly extreme and unpredictable weather patterns. With MRVin, Planboo’s dMRV technology, every step – from harvesting biomass to applying biochar – is tracked, so farmers can turn their efforts into verified carbon removal credits and create a new income stream.
For Better Cotton retailer and brand members, the partnership explores scalable biochar carbon removal insetting models, shaping an approach that may play an important role in how the cotton sector addresses Scope 3 emissions and contributes toward SBTi FLAG reduction and removal targets.
