We’re excited to share that Coffee Biochar in Colombia has received a Sylvera Estimated Rating of AA–BBB as of 11/9/2025.

This recognition shows that with the right tools, training, and technology, a decentralised carbon removal approach built on collaboration can deliver the integrity, transparency, and impact the global market is calling for.

What is a Sylvera Estimation Rating?

Sylvera is one of the world’s leading carbon data platforms that independently evaluates carbon projects. Its Sylvera Estimated Rating is designed to identify high-potential projects worthy of further due diligence.

Projects are assessed across four key pillars:

  • Carbon Score: Measures actual carbon reductions or removals a project can deliver.
  • Additionality: Confirms that the project’s impact extends beyond what would occur without it.
  • Permanence: Assesses the long-term sustainability of carbon benefits.
  • Co-Benefits: Recognises added social, economic, or environmental benefits.

Ranging between AA–BBB, this rating positions the project in the upper half of Sylvera’s scale (D to AAA), signalling credible carbon impact and co-benefits for the coffee community and supply chain.

About Coffee Biochar

In 2024, we joined forces with Biodiversal and Circular Agro, two management companies for regenerative agriculture in Colombia. The past year, they’ve been training, supporting and supervising a network of hundreds of smallholder coffee growers across Colombia to convert agricultural waste, otherwise burnt or left to decompose, into biochar. The biochar is applied back to their fields, improving soil fertility, water retention and crop productivity, while also creating an additional income stream for the farmers through carbon removal credits. Using Planboo’s MRVin technology, every step of the biochar production and application process is carefully monitored and measured to ensure precise carbon accounting.

By October 2025, biochar production had been successfully established across seven coffee communities, demonstrating the scalability of the project’s decentralised model.
