We are happy to share that the Farm Gai Kaisa 159 Biochar Project in Namibia has been assigned a Sylvera Rating of A as of 1/9/2025.
This recognition is a huge milestone in our journey of demonstrating that high-integrity biochar carbon removal in the Tropic is not only possible, but already happening at scale.
What Does a Sylvera Rating Mean?
Sylvera is one of the world’s leading carbon data platforms, assessing whether a project’s claimed climate impact truly reflects reality. Ratings are determined across four core pillars:
- Carbon Score: Measures actual carbon reductions or removals a project can deliver.
- Additionality: Confirms that the project’s impact extends beyond what would occur without it.
- Permanence: Assesses the long-term sustainability of carbon benefits.
- Co-Benefits: Recognises added social, economic, or environmental benefits.
Achieving an A rating validates the project’s credibility, resilience, and contribution to climate and community. Moving forward, we’re excited at the possibility of unlocking even higher ratings as our focus on operational excellence continues.
About Farm Gai Kaisa 159, Namibia Biochar Project
Farm Gai Kaisa 159 is one of Africa’s largest Puro.earth biochar carbon removal projects, based in the Grootfontein district, Namibia. The project produces biochar to deliver durable carbon removal while addressing one of the country’s most urgent ecological crisis: the widespread encroaching Acacia bush across the Savannah. The thorny bush outcompetes native grasses, reducing grazing land for wildlife and livestock, and drive biodiversity loss. Through FSC-certified harvesting of the encroaching bush, turning it into biochar, and applying it back to soils in the region, large volumes of CO₂ are sequestered from the atmosphere. At the same time, degraded ecosystems are restored and new sustainable income opportunities are created for rural communities.
