We’re excited to share that the WongPhai Biochar Project in Ratchaburi, Thailand, has received an AA–BBB Estimation Rating from Sylvera as of 11/09/2025!

The AA–BBB grade places WongPhai’s community-driven project in the upper half of Sylvera’s scale (D to AAA), signalling third-party confidence that the project’s claimed tonnes of CO₂ will be removed and co-benefits delivered.

Congratulations Khom, Nui, Nick, and the whole WongPhai team on this well-deserved recognition!

What is a Sylvera Estimation Rating?

Sylvera is one of the world’s leading carbon data platforms that independently evaluates carbon projects. Its Sylvera Estimated Rating is designed to identify high-potential projects worthy of further due diligence. Independent ratings from agencies such as Sylvera play a key role on demonstrating the integrity of a carbon removal project.

Projects are assessed across four key pillars:

  • Carbon Score: Measures actual carbon reductions or removals a project can deliver.
  • Additionality: Confirms that the project’s impact extends beyond what would occur without it.
  • Permanence: Assesses the long-term sustainability of carbon benefits.
  • Co-Benefits: Recognises added social, economic, or environmental benefits.

About WongPhai Biochar

WongPhai is a community-driven biochar carbon removal project in rural Thailand that promotes bamboo cultivation and utilisation. Traditionally, bamboo offcuts were collected and burned, generating significant pollution. In 2023, Planboo and WongPhai joined forces to turn it into biochar, enabling the local community to take part in the global carbon removal movement. The biochar is also being used in septic ponds on pigs farms to enhance air quality and reduce methane emissions, and improves soil quality and increases crop yields in neighbouring farmlands.

What’s more, WongPhai’s mission exceeds beyond environmental impact. Through their biochar production, they create job opportunities, particularly for women and the elderly, support sustainable growth in the region via community workshops, and collaborate with universities to advance research on biochar’s impact. With their vision, devotion and dedication, WongPhai’s founders, Khom and Nui, are paving the way for Thailand to become a leader in biochar innovation.
